Santa Teresa di Gallura, Holidays in Santa Teresa di Gallura
The country runs on a promontory overlooking the southern coast to the north of Corsica, just 11 miles to the north-east of the archipelago of La Maddalena, and west, overlooking the Sea of Sardinia. The town is built around two bays: the Porto Longone, which is at the bottom of the harbor, and the Rena Bianca, which includes a beach of fine white sand. One of the characteristics of the shape of the town is the Roman plan, which is made up of an urban network of roads that intersect at right angles. The shape is typical of the Piedmont settlements of military origin (such as Carlisle and Calasetta built for tabarchini from Tunisia) and says that so far the impact has been the presence of the quota places in the Piedmont.
Formerly known as Longosardo (or Longo Sardo), was already in the Roman period a port of considerable importance for commercial traffic and was brought to Rome from which the granite extracted in the area, this information makes it a likely location of the ancient city of Tibula.
The caves of Capo Testa provided granite for the Duomo and the Baptistery of Pisa, it is said, even for the Pantheon in Rome. Around 1263, such was the importance of Longosardo that the same St. Francis of Assisi, who was in Corsica, he went to visit her. After the Saracen invasions, the town came under the Judges of Arborea, who built a castle of which are heavily armed now only remains poor. The castle was destroyed by the Genoese who wanted to avenge the siege so moved to the fortress of Bonifacio (Corsica). The destruction of the castle followed the depopulation of the village. The area became a favorite haunt of pirates, smugglers and bandits.
A historic site of particular interest is the Tower of Longosardo (built around the sixteenth century by order of King Philip II of Spain) located on the extreme edge of the rock of the country. When in 1720 the island passed to the Savoy was sent as commander of the tower, Francesco Maria Magnon, who understood the need to create a village near the fort. On 12 August 1808 a decree of Victor Emanuel I started the foundation of Santa Teresa, was the king himself who designed the plant in the country and decided the name in honor of his wife, Queen Maria Theresa of Habsburg-Este. At about 3 km from the center, was built under an ancient pine forest of the Church Buoncammino built in the seventeenth century: a place of extraordinary peace and unspoiled nature.
Of particular interest is the battery Ferrero: War ruins consist of artillery emplacements, bunkers, barracks, open pit mines and rail vehicles principally designed for the transport of war material and granite rock. Of particular importance are the archaeological sites of Lu nuragic Brandali and Head of the Bronze Age.
