Porto Conte
Porto Conte appears in the geography of Ptolemy with the name Bay of the Nymphs, evocative and mythological name, says by itself the enchantment of this place. On the northwest coast of Sardinia, near Alghero, Porto Conte is a natural bay about six kilometers long, almost lake shape, with clear waters.
Its borders are marked on the east from Punta Giglio and Capo Caccia to west. On this last is the Grotta of Neptune, an enchanting landscape formed by a series of lakes across narrow passages of rock and elaborate gilded columns of stalactites and stalagmites. You can access to the cave by boat or via a steep staircase of 656 steps. In the Cave of Neptune was turned the science fiction film Island of the Fishmen. Within Capo Caccia is also the Cave of Nereus, the sea flooded largest cavern of Mediterranean, with 500 meters of tunnels and pathways, the red coral grows on the walls.
On the surface, you can also admire the Grotta dei Pizzi e ricami and Grotta Verde o dell'Altare di Sant'Elmo, where Neolithic pottery were found. On Punta del Giglio side, divers can penetrate into the sea cave of Ghosts, whose name is due to the beautiful white limestone rock formations reminiscent of classic ghosts, represented by a white sheet and two holes for eyes. Beyond the tip of Capo Caccia can reached by boat Cala d'Inferno, a pebbly beach protected by a steep and stratified rock wall; in front of it stands the Foradada Island, a large white rock drilled from side to side by a cave carved from the sea. The night dive in the cave is an experience worth trying.
The presence of numerous and amazing caves - underwater and surface - makes this area particularly attractive for cavers and divers, but you can appreciate the beautiful nature of Capo Conte, also boating and hiking. This uncontaminated landscape is now protected by Natural Park of Porto Conte, the terrestrial part and, for the marine part, from the marine natural protected area Capo Caccia-Isola Piana.
