Santa Maria Navarrese
It is said that in 1052 a princess of Navarre escaped the sinking off the coast of Sardinia. Grate to the Virgin, the princess a shrine built in her honor. The small church gave the name to the place, Santa Maria Navarrese. We can see the little church overlooking the central square, surrounded by olive trees a thousand years old, real natural monuments which are part of the Urban park of Santa Maria Navarrese.
In the seventeenth century Spanish built, even here, a tower, to face the attacks of Saracens pirates. The place of great beauty, offering a glimpse of Mediterranean lying down almost touch the blue and clear sea. Santa Maria Navarrese has a marina that can accommodate 340 vessels. On its coast, the most fascinating places are: Cala Follò, Cala Goloritzè, Cala Luna, Spùligi de Nie e Cala Sisine. The patron saint of the town is Santa Maria Assunta, which is celebrated on August 15.
Santa Maria Navarrese is a hamlet of Baunei, whose old town is perched on a hill. In Baunei worth a visit the baroque church of St. Nicholas and the "Grotta del fico" cave, one of the most beautiful of all Sardinia. On one side of the mountain Tumbulu, nearby, shows a ridge of rock with the appearance of a face, perhaps a human creation or a product erosion.
A few miles from Santa Maria Navarrese and Baunei is located the airport Tortoli-Arbatax.
