La Maddalena
La Maddalena is an archipelago in northern Sardinia, made up of seven islands and dozens of islets. The landscape is one of the most admired in the world: the colors of sea and sand colors are Caribbean, the stain Mediterranean approaches to the granite rocks. For a long time, these islands remained uninhabited. In the thirteenth century in Santa Maria was a monastery of Benedictine hermits, for the rest of the Archipelago of La Maddalena was attended only by pirates, who had found an ideal retreat. In the seventeenth century a group of pastors began to courses colonize the islands, while at the end of the eighteenth century, the Sardinian-Piedmontese occupied it for a base for the military fleet; they built Fort St. Andrew, in the center of the village of La Maddalena. In 1793 the fort was besieged by Napoleon Bonaparte, who was defeated. During the Risorgimento, the island of Caprera assumed a role of primary importance: Garibaldi, after having been exiled, he decided to establish his dwelling, the famous White House, which now houses a museum dedicated to the Hero of Two Worlds. For nearly a century in Cala Francese the granite was mined, as well as Santo Stefano, who later hosted a base for USA submarines.
Now all the islands form the Maddalena Archipelago National Park, created in 1994 to protect a priceless natural environment, where there are animal and plant species unique in the world. The most famous natural wonder of the archipelago is the Pink Beach, on the Island of Budelli, symbol of the National Park. To prevent the ruin of this place and the disappearance of the characters that make it so fascinating, it is was prohibited to land and you can only admire the beach accompanied by park guides; staining Rose is due to the sands of bioclasts, fragments of mollusc shells, accumulated over the centuries. Here Michelangelo Antonioni's Red Desert in 1964 has filmed. There are many beaches where you can instead take the sun and dive into a sea, in particular include: Bassa Trinitą, Spalmatore, Testa del Polpo, Monti d'a Rena, Carlotto, Cala Lunga. On July 22 we celebrate St Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of the archipelago, with a procession by sea.
