Remains of Nuraghic, scattered in the wilderness, facing the sea. Between land and sea are the caves, picturesque natural architecture: large ones the Bue Marino and Ispingoli, with Europe's highest stalactite-stalagmite. The territory, now in the province of Nuoro, has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as witnessed by the village Nuraghe Mannu, several tombs of the giants and the domus de Janas, impressive burial structures. Later the area was dominated by Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantine. During the "giudicale" period numerous monasteries were built.
In the sixteenth century, under the Spanish, was built the Cathedral St. Catherine of Alexandria. The ritual feasts are really ancient, prior to Christianity that has incorporated. The fire of St. Anthony, fragrant rosemary, illuminating the country's Jan. 16: on this occasion is open cellars to taste the first wine of the year. The carnival is celebrated with horse racing in the center of the country.
