Medieval village perched on a promontory that juts out into the Gulf Asinara, in the province of Sassari. The panorama is amazing: you can see even the coast of Corsica. The Nuraghe Paddaju and walls megalithic on Ossona mountain testify the presence of ancient civilizations in this area. After the fall of Roman Empire, the territory was given to monastic orders. The foundation of Castelsardo was in the Twelfth century by the ligurian family Doria, who built a fortified village and called it Castelgenovese; the fort was soon populated by local residents, who moved there. In the fifteenth century castle passed to the Aragonese domain, who renamed it Castle Aragonese. In 1767 Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy gave the name Castelsardo, still in use. The village has retained its original structure, with walls and its towers to protect the castle of the Doria, now houses the Museum of Mediterranean, the ancient houses and palaces. Among the buildings stands the Cathedral of Sant' Antonio Abate, in Gothic-Catalan, which bell has a tiled dome. The most characteristic manifestations are the rites of Holy Week. In Castelsardo, also take palce the prize Navicella Sardegna. A curiosity: in the vicinity of the village is the rock elephant, named for the shape strikingly similar to a pachyderm.
