Porto Corallo is situated on the region called Gerrei, near the river mouth of Flumendosa and a few km from Muravera and Villaputzu. The name derives from the presence of coral colonies during the XVI AND XVII century. This region is rich in very interesting archaeological areas. Beaches. The coast of Porto Corallo is characterized by the alternance of little creeks, cliffs and long sandy beaches overlooking a crystal clear sea. The beach of Porto Corallo is dominated by a beautiful Spanish Tower, is located near the city centre, while at about 25 km north, there are the little village of Quirra and the homonymous beach. Archaeology In this area there are the important castle of Quirra and of Gibas, which proof of the ancient prestige of this region. The castle of Quirra is located a few km north from Porto Corallo and was built in the XIII century to protect this area. Near the castle there is the famous Church of San Nicola ( XIII century). The ruines of the castle of Gibas are located to the east, not far from Porto Corallo, while near the beach is possible to see the big tower of Porto Corallo, built by the Spanish. At about 15 km south of the tower there is the amazing pond of Colostrai, very fishing and rich in flora and fauna. Sport and activities. There are a lot of nautical centres on the coasts. On the beaches is possible to hire: sailing boats, catamarans, windsurf and canoes. Expert instructors will give daily lessons for beginners and experts. Diving Scuba-diving develops along the coast and the islands around. The diving centre offers equipment hire and the chance to obtain all the scuba diving PADI licences. Excursions – HORSE RIDING. A big adventure among history, nature, traditions, sea, mountain, lakes, wild boars, eagles and mouflons to discover a little piece of paradise!
